Search for "graduate employability in India" and you will find numbers from under 40% to over 70%. They are not contradicting each other. They measure different things. This page puts the main 2026 numbers side by side, says where each comes from and explains what they mean for the class of 2027.
All figures below are quoted as reported by the press coverage listed under Sources. Check the original report before reusing a number.

Why do the numbers disagree?
Three different questions are being answered.
- "Do graduates have the skills for a job?" Employability tests such as the India Skills Report and the Mercer Mettl index answer this. They score graduates on assessments, so results depend on the test, the sample and the roles considered.
- "What happens to graduates in the labour market?" Labour surveys such as the State of Working India answer this. They count who has work, and what kind.
- "What do employers plan to do?" Hiring-intent surveys such as TeamLease EdTech's answer this. They record plans, not outcomes.
A graduate can be "employable" on a test, "unemployed" in a survey and part of a company's hiring plan at the same time, because the numbers describe different parts of the same pipeline.
How many graduates does India produce?
Estimates differ by definition. SkillNation puts annual graduate output at about 10 million, made of roughly 8.5 million regular arts, commerce, science and business graduates plus about 1.5 million engineers. The State of Working India, as reported by Storyboard18, says the economy added about 5 million graduates a year between 2004 and 2023, while only about 2.8 million found work each year in that period.
If you see a headline number such as "8 million graduates a year", ask which definition it uses.
What does the State of Working India say about the gap?
As reported by the press:
- About 1.1 crore of 6.3 crore graduates aged 20 to 29 were unemployed in 2023.
- Around half of graduates find some work within a year, but much of it is gig work, self-employment or farming. Only about 6.7% land a stable salaried job within a year.
- Graduates still earn roughly twice what non-graduates earn at entry level, but that advantage has stopped growing.
- The report points to jobs growing more slowly than education, skill mismatch and lack of work experience among young graduates.
What does it mean for the class of 2027?
For students. The skill measures say many graduates are employable, and the labour data says the jobs are not always there. The way through is to be visibly better prepared. Employers surveyed say they are moving toward skills, proof of work and behaviour. See our guides on what recruiters want from freshers and placement preparation for Tier-2 and Tier-3 colleges.
For colleges. If skill and experience are the gap, give students real work and keep records of it. A placement system that tracks readiness, not just attendance, helps recruiters see that evidence.
For recruiters. With more graduates than suitable roles and wide variation in preparation, readiness evidence is the best filter. Platforms that show projects and assessments alongside marks reduce guesswork.
What should you do with these numbers?
- Quote them with their source and year.
- Do not add or compare numbers from different measures.
- Use hiring-intent data to understand demand, employability data to understand skills and labour surveys to understand outcomes.
- Update your view as new editions come out. The India Skills Report and TeamLease Career Outlook are published regularly.

Frequently asked questions
What is the employability rate of Indian graduates?
It depends on the test. The India Skills Report 2026, as reported by Careers360, gives 56.35% overall and 70.15% for BE/BTech. The Mercer Mettl India Graduate Skill Index, as cited by CSR Journal, gave 42.6% for 2024. They measure different things.
How many graduates does India produce every year?
Estimates range from about 5 million to about 10 million a year depending on the definition. The State of Working India 2026, as reported by Storyboard18, says the economy added about 5 million graduates a year between 2004 and 2023.
Why is graduate unemployment high if employers say they are hiring?
Hiring intent measures what employers plan, while unemployment measures what young graduates experience. The State of Working India points to jobs growing more slowly than education, skill mismatch and a lack of work experience.
Is employability the same as getting a job?
No. Employability scores estimate whether a graduate has the skills for a role. Getting a job also depends on whether suitable jobs exist, whether the graduate can reach them and whether they can show evidence of skill.
